Rejuvenate at the Blue Lagoon

One of the new 25 Wonders of the World “The Blue Lagoon – It often happens that when you actually visit a place that has been much written and spoken about, it does not live up to the hype. I have been underwhelmed many times by the so called must-see tourist traps (yes, Times Square; you’re the biggest one of them). Reading about the Blue Lagoon, and how it is not a natural hot spring and is really just a dumping ground for the water produced from a geothermal plant, was enough to make me not want to visit. But thanks to my less cynical spouse, we ended up at the famed Blue Lagoon. I’m happy to say that I was completely wrong this time. It was truly amazing to see the spectacular icy blue color of the lagoon, emitting steam, surrounded by volcanic rocks and snow covered mountains… my reaction was simply WOW.

We had decided to book our tour to the Blue Lagoon online with Reykjavik Excursions. Reykjavik Excursions offers various pick up locations throughout the city of Reykjavik at pre-set times that will transport you to the Reykjavik BSI Bus Terminal. At the BSI Terminal, you will be directed to board a bigger bus depending on the tour you opted for. The cost of our tour included transfer to/from Blue Lagoon (you can opt to be picked up or dropped off at Keflavík International Airport if you want, which a lot of people do to save on time by combining the trip with the airport ride), admission ticket to the geothermal spa (Standard Package) and the silica mud mask offered at the Silica Bar inside the lagoon. This Standard Blue Lagoon Package did not include a bathrobe, towel, slippers, free drink, entrance to the exclusive lounge but you can always upgrade to Comfort, Premium or Luxury packages once you get there.

When we visited the Blue Lagoon, there was hardly any wait time (we’ve heard it can get really crowded) and within 5-10 minutes we got our wrist bands, headed to the changing rooms (pretty well equipped) and straight to take a dip in the geothermal spa. One would think it would be insane to get into a bathing suit and walk towards the lagoon/spa in freezing temperatures but due to the constant steam coming from the spa, it was not uncomfortable at all. The Lagoon itself is quite huge and offers a lot to explore. The Silica and Algee Mask Bar inside the lagoon is a must visit spot – these masks deep cleanse and strengthen your skin, reduces the visibility of pores, and leaves your skin fresh and clear – I needed it for sure! ðŸ™‚

It is very relaxing to swim or walk around in the lagoon. There is no time limit except that you need to be cautious about your pick up time if you took a tour. Once you are done, you can shower, change, gather your belongings from the changing room and head to the Café and Gift Shop area. Free Wi-Fi is available so that’s a bonus.

I have to say, it was one of the most amazing and relaxing experience I had in a while and I felt completely rejuvenated. If I happen to go to Iceland again, I am definitely hitting this Wonder of the World (I know, I know) again.

Here are some tips –

  • Wear your bathing suit so you don’t waste any time when you get to the lagoon. Pack a small bag with a towel, pair of clothes, slippers and a hair brush.
  • Take a waterproof camera case if you plan to take pictures within the Spa area
  • There are lockers in the changing rooms so you don’t need to worry about your personal belongings
  • You can book a Standard Package and opt to upgrade when you get to the lagoon
  • If you would like to book a tour, I would recommend Reykjavik Excursions
  • If you like the Silica Mud Mask or the Algae Mask that you used at the Blue Lagoon, you can order it from the convenience of your home from Amazon and not pay a fortune at the Spa

I am sure that you will enjoy your visit to the Blue Lagoon very much. Please comment and let me know about your experience!
