The final leg of our European adventure brought us to Montenegro, a gem nestled along the Adriatic coast. Our day began bright and early, with a 6:50 am pick-up from our hotel in Srebreno, Croatia. The excitement was palpable as we embarked on a small tour that promised a day of breathtaking scenery and rich history.
Perast: Tranquil Beauty - Our first stop was Perast, a
picturesque town overlooking a serene bay that resembled a glassy lake. Here,
we had the pleasure of visiting Our Lady of the Rocks, a man-made island with a
church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The boat ride to the island was
enchanting, and we were fortunate to have the place almost to ourselves, a rare
treat. The island, with its storied history of taking over 200 years to build,
left us in awe.
Kotor: A City Steeped in History - Next, we headed to Kotor,
a city famous for its well-preserved Old Town and imposing fort. The 45 minute
drive was scenic, and upon arrival, we had a few hours to explore. While some
adventurous souls might tackle the 1,400 steps to the fort for panoramic views,
we chose to meander through the charming streets of the Old Town. The town's
feline residents, revered for their historic role in protecting Kotor from
plague and earthquakes, added a quirky charm to our visit. We couldn't resist
indulging in the local delicacy, Krempita, a creamy dessert that was simply
divine.
Budva: A Blend of History and Leisure - Our final stop in
Montenegro was Budva, where we spent two delightful hours exploring the Old
City's Citadel. The cobblestone streets and well-preserved architecture made
for a pleasant stroll. We found several inviting spots for a refreshing drink
and a delicious meal, savoring the vibrant atmosphere of this coastal town.
A Perfect End in Cavtat, Croatia - On our way back to
Croatia, we made a spontaneous request to our guide to drop us off in Cavtat.
This picturesque town, with its beautiful boardwalk and serene beach, was the
perfect place to unwind. The calm waters invited us for a relaxing swim, wrapping
up our day on a high note.
Reflecting on our 9 day journey through Europe, Montenegro
stood out as a highlight. Its blend of natural beauty, historical richness, and
warm hospitality left a lasting impression. We can't wait to return and relive
the magic all over again.
