Exploring Plitvice National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site

One of the most recommended places on our itinerary and rightly so was Plitvice National Park. This natural wonder is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it truly lives up to its reputation.

We embarked on an 8am tour from Zagreb, but the earlier you go the better to avoid the crowds and make the most of your visit. The bus ride takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Along the way, you’ll pass through the picturesque town of Rastoke, known for its 23 stunning waterfalls. If you're driving yourself, a stop here is highly recommended, although our tour didn’t include this option.

Plitvice National Park is a breathtaking landscape featuring over 90 waterfalls and a series of emerald green and blue lakes. The park offers a 5-6 mile trail that takes about 4 hours to hike. This trail winds through some of the most beautiful panoramic views of waterfalls, mountains, and crystal-clear lakes you’ll ever see.

After completing the hike, we stopped for lunch to refuel. Then, it was back on the bus for a 3 hour ride to our next destination: the beautiful beach town of Split. The entire day is well-spent and will likely take around 10-12 hours, so plan accordingly.

Plitvice National Park is a must-visit destination in Croatia, offering an unforgettable experience filled with natural beauty and serenity. Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply someone who appreciates nature, this park will not disappoint.
