Our journey in Split began with high expectations and a well-laid plan to start the day with the much-anticipated 5 island boat and blue caves tour. However, the weather had other plans, and our tour was unfortunately canceled. Undeterred, we quickly pivoted and decided to take a ferry to Hvar Island in the Adriatic Sea.
Booking the ferry at directferries.com was straightforward, and the journey took just one hour. The ferry ride itself was one of the best we’ve experienced, offering a smooth and scenic transition from Split to Hvar.
Upon arrival in Hvar, we treated ourselves to a delightful lunch at Spice Asian Food. The food was excellent and highly recommended for anyone visiting the island. Our initial plan was to visit Stari Grad, but with no Uber available and taxis being too expensive, we decided to explore the town on foot.
We strolled up to Fortica Fortress, which rewarded us with breathtaking panoramic views of Hvar and the neighboring islands. Though our time on Hvar was limited to just 3 hours, we recommend allowing at least 5-7 hours to fully appreciate the beauty and charm of the island.
Returning to Split, we spent the evening walking around the picturesque streets, accumulating our step count for the day. Split's nightlife is vibrant, with an abundance of bars and clubs to explore. However, we chose to turn in early to prepare for our next adventure: a trip to Dubrovnik, famously known as King's Landing from Game of Thrones, with a pit stops along the way in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Split is renowned for the Klis Fortress, known as Mareen Castle in Game of Thrones. This historical site now hosts a GOT and War museum, making it a must-visit for fans of the series and history enthusiasts alike.
Despite the weather disrupting our initial plans, our day in Split and Hvar was filled with unexpected joys and discoveries. From the culinary delights at Spice Asian Food to the stunning views from Fortica Fortress, our quick pivot turned into a memorable adventure. Split and Hvar offer a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that is sure to enchant any traveler.
For those planning a visit, remember to be flexible with your plans and open to exploring new paths - sometimes the best experiences are the ones you don’t plan for.
